David the Tailor For her father, in Poland, in the 1930's, the “elements” of tailoring defined a sort of “aesthetic dance,” Sara Neumeyer tells us in this beautiful photo essay honoring his memory. Sparely and powerfully, Neumeyer explores this aesthetic of tailoring which, like ancient geometry, is rendered on almost every photo page with lines delineating patterns and with numbers. The numbers on a tape measure, as objective as numbers always are, are superimposed upon a loving and deeply personal evocation of her father’s daily tools: a coal-heated iron, scissors, or a mightily enlarged thimble placed against a contrasting fabric, impressing on us that every one of these objects carries a symbolic meaning far beyond itself. The digital art book opens with a striking frontal depiction of a little brown coat with red piping made for little Sara, and closes with that same coat, humorously and fittingly viewed from the back. Above all, these artfully photoshopped images are an homage to a father, an artisan, a craftsman who, by the tone and quality of the illustrations, is placed within the early years of this century, but whose skill and love transcend a specific place or time.
